The Awabakal and the town's name
The Awabakal were the area's first people. Before the area now known as Cooranbong was settled and developed, people who identified with the Awabakal group lived there. How long they lived as a single group is not known, and neither is how they dealt with people outside their own kin, in peace or in conflict.
The name Cooranbong comes from the Aboriginal word "Kour-an-bong". That word is recorded as meaning "rocky bottom creek" or "water over rocks".
Lieutenant Simpson and his convicts
Lieutenant Percy Simpson was the first modern settler. The government gave him a land grant of 2,000 acres, about 809 hectares, and assigned him six convicts. Those convicts cleared ground, tended cattle and put up a homestead beside Dora Creek. Simpson stayed in the area for two years.
Moses Carroll, one of those convicts, later worked as a stockman there, and in time he became the area's police constable. The town's founding is dated to 1826.
Timber and the growing town
The Robertson Land Act of 1861 let the town grow. It encouraged a Catholic church to be built, and later a school, a police station and a courthouse in 1873, a post office in 1881 and an Anglican church.
In these years, timber cutting was the main economic activity, and the population reached 700 people during the 1880s.
By 1891 the population had declined to 206 people.
The railway and the rise of Morisset
The railway from Sydney to Newcastle was built in the 1880s, and it passed about five kilometres east of the town centre. The station and the settlement around it were first labelled Cooranbong, and later became known as Morisset.
Alongside a significant economic depression in the colony, the distance of the railway from the town centre was devastating to the local economy. By 1891 the population had declined to 206 people.
Avondale and the Adventist church
The depression lasted until the Seventh-day Adventist Church acquired 1,500 acres, about 607 hectares, on the north bank of Dora Creek. There the church built Avondale School for Christian Workers in 1897 and the Sanitarium Health Food Company in 1909.
Cooranbong has a particularly large Seventh-day Adventist presence. In 2021, 23.5 per cent of the suburb was Seventh-day Adventist, a share higher than every other religious denomination apart from "no religion".
